HISTORY Information for Corfu Island
Corcyra in the Doric dialect is the daughter of the Aisopos River. It is said
in Greek Mythology that the sea-god, Poseidon, fell in love with her, abducted
her, and brought her to this island, giving it her name.
According to archaeological findings found in Sidari, Corfu was not always an
island, but with the melting of the ice, the level of the sea rose and
separation from the mainland occurred.
The town of the island, that was already the capital, was trading with all the
towns of the Adriatic Sea, becoming an important commercial centre, a strong
naval power and an important colonial town. During the years, Corfu was
attacked and conquered by Spartans, Romans, Russians, French and British and
suffered a lot by frequent pirate raids. However, from all its conquerors, the
character of the island was mostly determined by the Venetians (their
domination lasted from 1386 to 1797). Not only were commerce and agriculture at
their peak, but intellectual and artistic life also flourished during these
years. While the rest of Greece was under Ottoman occupation, the protected
Corfiots spoke Italian and enjoyed a flowering of literature and the arts.
Corfu and the Ionian Islands were united with Greece in 1864 by a decision of
the Ionian Parliament and the consent of the British Government. During the
20th century, Corfu participated, with the rest of Greece, to the two World
Wars and suffered from great damages. Since then, Corfu has worked on
developing its natural resources and tourism, becoming one of Greece's most
prosperous islands and most popular tourism destinations.
MUSEUMS AND other interesting SITES in Corfu
Island
Corfu Island offers a big variety of museums and sites that are worth checking
out. Some of these are the Archaeological Museum (Tel. 26610
30680), the Museum of Oriental Art (Tel. 26610 30443) in the
English Palace of St. Michael and St. George; the Town Hall,
a superb example of Venetian architecture built in 1663, the church of
Corfu’s patron Saint Spyridon built in 1596 with its valuable icons
and collection of gold and silver offerings, the Old Fortress (wonderful
views of Corfu Town and across to the mainland, so don't forget your camera),
the New
Fortress (which is considered a masterpiece of fortress
architecture), the Achilleion (Tel. 26610 56210, built by the family of
Laurence Durrell, Queen Elizabeth, also known as Sissy, of Austro-Hungary in
1890), the Palace of Mon Repos (or Paleopolis the ancient capital
of Corfu, Tel. 26610 30680) and of course the Pontikonisi, a
picturesque isle just off the coast of Corfu.
Make sure you wander in the streets of the town and admire the superb Italian
and French buildings, Byzantine churches and flowered squares. Also, don’t miss
Campielo, the oldest neighbourhood of Corfu Town, and the most charming and it
is a perfect setting for an afternoon stroll or a romantic dinner
LOCAL THINGS & STUFF to check or BUY in Corfu
Island
Corfu is one of the richest areas in Greece. Fine examples of folk art and
crafts are displayed in shops all over the island: hand-woven textiles and
embroideries with intricate designs, objects of all kinds carved out of olive
tree wood, silver utensils and lovely jewellery. Before you leave Corfu, be
sure to try its cuisine, with sofrito (a spicy veal dish) and pastitsada (a
veal and pasta dish), Koum Kwat in the form of both a liqueur and a sweet
preserve (on sale everywhere) and Mandolato, this black and white nougat is
another trademark of Corfu Island.

Paxos, or Paxoi, and its sister Antipaxoi are two tiny islands
just south of Corfu. The beauty of these islands is their simplicity. Paxoi is
covered with about half a million ancient olive trees and with tiny coves of
crystal clear waters, this is where you come to really get away from it all.
Paxos has three main towns, all located at natural anchorages: Gaios, Lakka
and Loggos. Lakka is at the northern tip of the island is set in a horse
shoe shaped bay and flanked by high ground covered in olive and cypresses
trees. The bay is almost completely sheltered from the open sea which makes it
excellent for swimming and for mooring boats.
Paxoi, (despite its size) has over 30 beaches to choose from. Some of these
are: Alati, Arkoudaki, Balos, Charami, Glyfada, Kaki Lagkada, Kamini,
Kanoni, Kipos, Kipiadi, Kloni Gouli, Lakkos, Levrechio, Marmari, Monodentri,
Orkos, Plakes, and Soulalaina There are no sandy beaches though. The
west coast is mainly sheer cliffs, but the eastern coast is full of small
pebble bays which shelve gently into crystalline waters. Some can only be
reached by motorboat, which is the best way to explore the local coastline. The
cave at Kastanida is the most impressive at 600 ft high though the largest is
at Grammatiko. All are worth a visit. Quieter spots can be found further to the
south.
AntiPaxoi covers four square kilometres and instead of the olive groves
of Paxoi there are many small vineyards. Antipaxoi is very popular with
tourists because of its beaches of soft sand and Caribbean-hued waters, such as
Voutoumi, Vrika and Mesovrika and emerald green waters. There are
no shops on the island, or people, only small houses which are used mainly at
weekends. The tiny neighbouring island of Daskalia has a secluded beach
with stunning views of the mountains of Lefkas.

HISTORY Information for Paxoi Island
According to tradition, Paxos was once joined to Corfu. Frequent tempests,
provoked by Poseidon and Aiolos, gods of the sea and the winds, caused the land
to sunder, and from then on Paxos continued to move further away to the south.
Paxos' history is very similar to that of Corfu. The period of Venetian rule
between the 14th and 18th century, decisively changed the face of Paxos. During
that time the land was planted with olive trees. The houses and streets and the
fortress, on the small isle of Agios Nikolaos, built by Venetians, nowadays
offer visitors a chance to witness some fine architectural examples from the
past.
MUSEUMS AND other interesting SITES in Paxoi Island
Worth visiting is the Museum of Paxos (Tel. 26620 32566) in Gaios, also
guarding the mouth of the natural harbour of Gaios are two islands: The more
distant island, with a lighthouse and pilgrimage church is that of the Monastery
of Panagia (Virgin Mary) and St Nicholas Island, which forms
a natural breakwater leading to the inlet of Gaios harbour. On St Nicholas
Island there are two small churches, St Nicholas and St Ioannis, and an old
Venetian fortress that was built in1423 (permission to visit the fortress must
be obtained by the municipal authority Tel. 26620 32100). Just outside the
village of Magazia, you can also visit the Olive Press museum. The
museum is open from 11.00 to 14.00
LOCAL THINGS & STUFF to check or BUY in Paxoi Island
In Paxoi, you can find handmade olivewood designs, gold and silver jewellery
and fine pottery. Loggos is a very quiet fishing village with a picturesque
harbour fronted by tavernas and small bars. It's a great place to peacefully
laze by day or drink and dine by night. AntiPaxoi wine can be bought in the
local shops in Paxos or can be sampled in the tavernas on Anti Paxos and Paxos.
It’s well worth tasting.

HISTORY Information for Ithaki Island
The etymology of the name Ithaca is not determined but many believe that the
island was named after Ithacos, son of Poseidon and the nymph Amfimele.
Following the findings of a small Bronze Age settlement in Pilikata area, it is
believed that the ancient city of Ithaca lies somewhere in the vicinity. As with
all the rest of the Ionian Islands, Ithaki has the same rich and varied history
with various conquerors and circumstances. What is worth noted is that during
the Mycenaean period (1500-1100 B.C.) Ithaca became the capital of all the
Ionian Islands, and the opposite lands, and was referred to as one of the most
powerful states of that time. The lthacans were characterised as great
navigators and explorers with daring expeditions reaching further than the
Mediterranean Sea. When Venetians dominated the island, Vathy became the
capital of the island and due to fear of pirate attacks, the Ithacans begun to
built ships in order to confront the pirates, thus leading to the development
and the power of the island’s shipping industry and the improvement of society.
Ithaki became part of the New Greek state in 1864 together with the rest of the
Ionian Islands. Today, tourism is one of the main sources of income for the
Ithacans.

Island

Archaeological Museum (Tel. 26740-32200) in

civilization), Monastery of the Archangels at Perahori, the Kathara
Monastery (Moni Katharon) which offers a unique view of the

HISTORY Information for Kefalonia Island
Kefalonia was one of the first places in Greece to be inhabited, as shown by
various findings in Fiskardo and tools dating back to 50,000 BC. According to
the Greek Mythology, the island got its name from Kefalos, its first King, who
divided it into four cities which took their names from his four sons: Pali,
Krani, Sami and Proni. At a time when trade was in its infancy, Kefalonia was
the breadbasket of the other Ionian Islands. It produced olive oil, wine and
fruit and due to its vast forests, it also provided plenty of timber to build
ships and develop trade. As all other Greek islands, Kefalonia fell under many
rulers, like the Romans, the Normans, the Franks, the Venetians, the French and
the British. In 1941 it was also Hitler who united his forces with those of the
Italians and dominated the island. The story is described in the famous book
(that became a movie) “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, written by Louis de
Bernieres. The influence of the European conquerors on the life and habits of
Kefalonians resulted in a particular way of shaping their speech, attire,
education and art. Nowadays, local dances and songs have acquired their own
character and are accompanied by violins, guitars or mandolins.

HISTORY Information for Zakynthos Island
In Greek Mythology, the famous poetic writer, Homer claimed that the history of
the people of Zakynthos began with the arrival of the Trojan Prince Zakynthos
some 1500 years BC. However, evidence of human bones was found in the bay of
Laganas from the Palaeolithic Era. Zakynthos' colourful and turbulent history
has seen a succession of invaders from Athenians, Franks, Romans, Venetians,
French to the British in the nineteenth century, though Zakynthos joined Greece
in 1864 together with the rest of the Ionian Islands. Without ever losing its
Greek identity, Zakynthos, got to know different cultures and mentalities.
Zakynthos became a receiver of many cultural influences which then expounded,
and as a result contributed in a great extend to the configuration of the
Modern Greek spirit. Tourism first came to Zakynthos about twenty years ago and
the parts of the island were transformed.

locals in the village taverna. There are 3 main villages: Vathi, Katomeri and
Spartochori. Vathi is a tiny port on the Northeast coast. In a sheltered

Mathraki, It's the northern most and the smallest of the
Diapontian Islands but it's very picturesque and it has a magnificent coastline
which forms bays, 2 of the largest are Ammos and Apidies, with little taverns

is 4 km from NW to SE and it's width of 1 klm from W to E. Its surface exceeds
3 square km. The small harbor in Mathraki is a haven because it's not affected
by any weather conditions. The two sides of the port protect it from North and
East winds, while the rest is protected by the bulk of the islands.
A great uniqueness and an important tourist attraction for the
island is the infinite beach of Portelo that occupies the largest part of the
North Eastern side of the island. With its marvelous beach that reaches almost
3klmand it's shallow crystal clear waters that slowly deepen , Portelo beach is
accessible and friendly even to one's that don't know how to swim. Mathraki
with its lovely natural beauty and it's hospitable native inhabitants can offer
the ideal get away from the hassle of the big city. It's private , secluded and
surrounded by a magnificent serene environment.
Every July there's a great big festival and Mathraki gets crowded
of about 300 people, mostly Corfu residents partly Corfu vacationers. They
arrive at Mathraki's port for a night of dancing, eating and drinking, this
continues into the wee hours and it takes place right on the beach under the
beautiful star lit summer sky.
Othoni, it's the largest of the three islands. It's 10 km at a
distance of 20 km Northwest of Corfu . The maximum length and width of the
island is 5.6km and 3.6km respectively. It's sparsely populated, it's the
western most point of Greece. It's possible by boat to reach one of the most
known beaches Aspri Ammos, (white sand), this is where it's said that Odysseys
was kept by Calypso. Othoni is also known for its light house, Othoni Kastri.
It was built in 1872, on the west coast of the island. It's still active aid to
navigation. This island is perfect for a sailing holiday but also for quiet
holidays ashore. The island was famed for its good climate and it's said that
during the British protectorate sick soldiers would be sent here to recuperate.
Erikoussa is a peaceful island for a quick escape from routine
life. The azure beaches and green hills with colorful homes on the sides make
for an impressive scene. It's a small and round island 2 kilometers in
diameter. The landscape of this island resembles that of Sidari on the coast of
Corfu opposite on the south coast we find Porto, it's one immense stretch of
sandy beach ( Faro or Fiki) which attracts many visitors from Corfu . In the
distance we can see the mountains of Albania . A footpath leads northwards
through lush vegetation to a baech named Pangini. The hospitality will be make

Parga is a
picturesque small town on the north-western coast of Greece, in the area
called Epirus. Parga town is situated in a sheltered bay and its houses climb
the mountainside from seaside to the top. It's got a castle, one large beach
on the other side of the mountain called Valtos Beach, two smaller beaches in
town, an island across the bay with a chapel on, a pier for the tourboats and
fishingboats in the middle of town and another beach a couple of kilometers
south of town in the next village called Lichnos beach. Parga is
surrounded by mountains covered with olive groves. The olive groves are
actually more like olive-woods, than groves. The trees are quite large. The
only other place where I've seen olivetrees this big is at Corfu. Apart from
Parga, and some smaller villages nearby, this area, called the Epirus, is
mountaneous and rather empty. It is far between the villages. Parga was a
positive surprise. It is sometimes advertised as a small town on the mainland
with an island-feeling to it. And that is exactly what it is. It is also
still a very genuine greek small town. You get the real greek food at most
places (if not all), not the tourist version, and people are just very nice.
There are as many greek tourists as people from elsewhere in the world.
Wintertime Parga has about 2.500 inhabitants. During tourist-season, many
more. With the
nice town, the harbour and its restaurants, the nearby beaches and the good
food, Parga is worth a visit. It is a quiet and relaxing place. Not for those
who want a lot to do and having a party but for those who want to relax and
take it easy and to make trips into the mainland and some of the nearby
islands like Paxos and Antipaxos. The big island of Corfu is also not all
that far away. You reach
Parga by flying to Preveza Airport and than travel north for about an hour. The nearest
large town is Ioannina in the north, which like Parga, suffered under the
rule and occupation of Ali Pasha. During that time the people of Parga were
evacuated to Corfu. (More about Ali Pasha here). They eventually
came back. |
